After the initial feelings of shock, fear, anxiety, depression, anger, sadness & acceptance took over me after my son's diagnosis, I went straight to researching. I found many free resources available and started taking advantage of as many of them as possible; Support groups, therapy, early intervention, music therapy, swimming lessons, you name it, I wanted in! I quit my job, turned our spare room into a "therapy room", ordered tons of Autism related tools/games etc, started my own business that I could do from home and enrolled him in any and every type of therapy/play group that I could schedule.
My son was very recently diagnosed- in the last 4 months of intensive therapy he has gone from completely non-verbal, to 50+ words, use of sign language and recognizing family members with ease. As a parent with an special needs child, I am speaking from first hand experience, early intervention makes ALL the difference. After your child's diagnosis, take a few days to process and then remind yourself that they are exactly the same amazing child you know and love, then get to work with therapy! Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions as to what therapy and tools I have used to help get my son speaking. I am obviously not a doctor or professional, but I am a Mom who has tried various things and found what has worked for my son and would love to share with other parents out there that may be in the same situation.
